This time last last year, on that very day,
A turning point in our lives, as they would say.
I awoke abruptly, as the day was here,
My eyes showed calm, who knew they hid fear?
I looked at myself at the mirror, before I left,
And wondered if, I would be the victim of theft.
Of things I've never really treasured,
Only to realise they mattered when measured.
The bag which weighed upon me, was it heavy or what?
Or was it that sinking, burning feeling in my heart?
We reached, the place where families all came,
Words unspoken, but the feelings the same.
I didn't know what to say to her on the phone.
It was blank, all that mattered was the tone.
She cried that day, after that phone call.
I wish she didn't, because I would fall.
We all arrived, at this god forsaken land.
For country, they said, we would learn to fend.
The oath, the contract that bound all of us,
To serve unconditionally, we will thus.
I will always remember, as we bid farewell, that sight.
I will always remember, 50 people lay awake, nobody slept that night.
I will always remember, 1st of April, this day, that date.
The day that changed my life, my world, my fate.
